Paddy Broster & Gary Passey

In 2014, Paddy and Gary were intrigued by these 40 acres for sale on Denman. Although a former clearcut, it offered wonderful views of the Beaufort Mountains, and seemed a perfect location to build a small-footprint home. Now, 8 years later, amid swaths of arbutus trees, the owners have designed and created a productive garden (the peach tree is a favourite), four naturalistic ponds, a “Fort Knox’ style chicken condo, housing a flock of heritage chickens and have built a house with low-energy consumption and an integrated rainwater collection that meets all of their home and garden needs. The owners describe the home’s aesthetic as “retro-kitchy” and you shouldn’t miss this home’s delightful quirks; check out the bathtub on the front porch for mountain-view bathing and the water cistern repurposed as a shower stall. Being right up to date, Paddy and Gary have also created a large workshop plus so much more!
